(...) Mama Hawa started playing basketball at the age of 5, training with her cousins at UFAB. This is how she discovered her true passion for the sport. As she grew up, her family always supported her. “My uncles really encouraged me to become a professional basketball player,” she says.
“When I started wearing the headscarf at the age of 13, I felt the way people looked at me change,” she continues. At first, wearing the veil during games wasn't a particular problem, but over time, her headscarf began to overshadow her talent and isolate her from the team. She felt that her place on the team was only due to a lack of players. She knew she had to make a decision. “I don't regret it... well, I do regret it... but I think I made the right choice.”
The announcement of her decision to give up basketball upset her family, especially her mother. “I wondered why she had suddenly stopped, she wanted to make it her career,” she recalls. At first, Mama Hawa chose not to reveal the reasons for her decision. But her parents' concern prompted her to confess that her headscarf was now preventing her from playing. “I told them that my faith was more important.” Her family strongly supported her decision. “I thought it was a courageous choice,” says her mother.
